Chennai, September 21, 2026: Chennai Super Kings have officially named former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for the IPL 2027 season, bringing a new chapter to one of the most successful franchises in Indian Premier League history.
Zaheer will take over from Stephen Fleming, whose remarkable 18-year association with CSK came to an end earlier this year. Fleming had been at the helm of the franchise since 2009 and played a central role in building the team into a consistent force in the IPL.
The appointment of Zaheer marks a significant change in CSK’s coaching structure as the franchise looks to rebuild and prepare for the next phase of its IPL journey.
CSK officially announced the appointment on Monday, welcoming the former India left-arm pacer as the team’s new head coach.
Zaheer Khan Takes Charge Ahead of IPL 2027
Zaheer Khan brings extensive experience from both international cricket and the IPL to the CSK setup.
During his playing career, Zaheer represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is. He was also India’s leading wicket-taker during the historic 2011 ODI World Cup, where he claimed 21 wickets as the team lifted the trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
His connection with Dhoni is therefore not new.
The two were part of India’s successful 2011 World Cup campaign, and Zaheer’s arrival at CSK now brings the former India teammates together again in a new professional role.
Zaheer also played 100 IPL matches during his career, representing franchises including Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
After retiring from international cricket, he moved into coaching and management roles, gaining experience in franchise cricket.
From Player to Coach
Zaheer’s transition into coaching has included a significant stint with Mumbai Indians, where he served in senior cricket-management roles, including Director of Cricket Operations and later Global Head of Cricket Development.
He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor.
That experience will now be put to the test at CSK, where he inherits a franchise with a long-established culture and extremely high expectations.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath described Zaheer’s playing career and ability to nurture young players as important additions to the franchise’s setup.
CSK Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan also highlighted Zaheer’s experience and his work with young cricketers, particularly fast bowlers.
End of the Stephen Fleming Era
Zaheer’s appointment comes after CSK and Stephen Fleming mutually agreed to end their association earlier this year.
Fleming joined CSK as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking over as head coach in 2009.
Over the next 18 years, he became one of the longest-serving and most successful coaches in IPL history.
Under Fleming, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. The team also established a reputation for consistency, regularly reaching the latter stages of the tournament.
However, CSK’s recent IPL campaigns were difficult.
The franchise failed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, including the 2026 campaign. The team finished eighth in the 2026 points table, marking another disappointing season for a side that has traditionally been one of the IPL’s most consistent teams.
Fleming’s departure therefore represented the end of an era and the beginning of a rebuilding phase for the franchise.
Why Zaheer Khan?
The appointment also reflects CSK’s reported preference for an Indian coach as the franchise moves into its next phase.
Before Zaheer’s appointment was confirmed, several names had been discussed as possible successors to Fleming. Reports had linked former India batter and Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani with the position, while overseas options were also considered.
However, CSK ultimately settled on Zaheer.
The Indian Express reported that Zaheer has been handed a one-year contract with an option for an extension, while MS Dhoni played a role in the decision-making process.
Zaheer’s familiarity with Indian cricket, experience in the IPL and background in player development were factors in his appointment.
Zaheer’s First Challenge: Rebuilding CSK
The biggest challenge for Zaheer will not simply be replacing Fleming.
He will inherit a CSK side that is entering a period of transition.
The franchise has traditionally relied on experienced players and a stable core, but its recent struggles have highlighted the need for changes in team composition and approach.
The upcoming IPL cycle will therefore be important for CSK as it looks to build a squad capable of competing consistently again.
Zaheer’s experience in working with young players could become particularly important during this phase.
His background as a fast bowler may also bring a different perspective to the development of CSK’s bowling resources.
