Sano, Japan: India survived a major scare against Japan on Tuesday, September 22, edging past the hosts by just two runs in a rain-shortened one-off T20I at the Sano International Cricket Ground.
The match, which was the first-ever men’s T20 international meeting between India and Japan, was reduced to five overs per side after rain and a wet outfield delayed the start. Despite having only 30 balls to bat and bowl, the contest turned into a tense thriller that went down to the final ball.
The result also gave India a major milestone in T20I cricket. With the two-run victory, India became the first team in men’s T20I history to register 200 wins, with the tally including victories achieved through Super Overs.
India Manage Only 32 Runs
India won the toss and elected to bat first, but the conditions made stroke-making difficult.
On a sluggish surface offering turn and extra bounce, India’s top order struggled to find its rhythm. Opener Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck, while Sanju Samson contributed 9 runs from seven balls.
Captain Shreyas Iyer provided the main resistance with a 16-run knock from 12 deliveries, including one boundary. Ishan Kishan made three before being dismissed, while Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube remained unbeaten as India finished their five overs at 32/4.
Japan’s 17-year-old spinner Charlie Hara-Hinze was one of the standout performers with the ball, taking two wickets for 17 runs from his two overs. Benjamin Ito-Davis and Ibrahim Takahashi also claimed a wicket each.
Japan Come Within Two Runs of a Historic Upset
Chasing 33 from five overs, Japan made a determined start.
Captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming scored 12 runs from 12 balls and kept Japan in the contest. The hosts, however, struggled to find boundaries consistently against India’s experienced spin attack.
Washington Sundar played a key role with the ball, finishing with 2/13, while Axar Patel was given the responsibility of bowling the final over.
Japan required eight runs from the final six deliveries.
Axar Patel held his nerve and restricted Japan to just five runs from the final over. Japan eventually finished at 30/3, falling two runs short of what would have been one of the biggest upsets in recent T20I cricket.
India Complete 200 T20I Wins
While the margin of victory was small, the result carried significant statistical importance for Indian cricket.
India’s win over Japan was their 200th victory in men’s T20 internationals, making them the first team to reach the landmark. India’s milestone victories have included wins over South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia and now Japan.
India’s first T20I victory came against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006. The team reached 50 wins in 2017, 100 in 2022, 150 in 2024 and completed the 200-win mark in Sano in 2026.
The landmark was achieved in a match that, on paper, was expected to be heavily tilted towards India. Instead, Japan pushed the two-time defending T20 world champions until the final delivery.
Historic Match Beyond Cricket
The fixture also carried significance outside the cricket field.
The India-Japan T20I was organised as part of celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The game also provided both teams with preparation ahead of the men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games.
For Japan, the match represented a landmark moment as the country’s men’s team faced a Full Member nation in T20I cricket for the first time. Japan’s players were able to test themselves against an Indian side containing several established international cricketers.
The Japanese side also earned praise for taking the contest deep despite the massive difference in experience between the two teams.
Japan’s Fighting Performance
Japan’s performance became one of the biggest talking points of the match.
After restricting India to only 32 runs, Japan came within touching distance of victory. Their disciplined bowling and ability to exploit the slow conditions kept India’s batting lineup under pressure throughout the five-over innings.
Japan’s players ultimately could not complete the chase, but their performance demonstrated the growing reach of cricket in a country where the sport remains outside the mainstream sporting landscape.

The shortened contest provided limited opportunity for the Indian batting lineup, but the bowlers were forced to defend a very small total under pressure.
India will now shift focus towards the Asian Games campaign, carrying with them a historic 200th T20I victory — but also the experience of having been pushed all the way by Japan in Sano.
